What is the ideal temperature for my home?

Are you and your loved ones or coworkers in a constant battle over the thermostat? Well apparently around 75% of Americans argue over the thermostat. Each person has their optimal temperature and when they’re together, finding an ideal temperature that suits them all is tough.

So, here is a cheat sheet we’ve curated from the experts on the ideal temperatures for the different members in your home.

Ideal temperature for men and women

You might draw experience from sitting with your partner or from the office, but it seems that females feel colder than the males. And according to science it's true. Women feel more comfortable at a room temperature of 25ºC (77ºF) and men at 22ºC (71ºC). One study found that women performed math and other tasks much better when the room was warmer. It’s due to the difference in male and female physiology, with fat-to-muscle ratio and their body sizes that make women usually feel colder.

Ideal temperature for children and babies

Little ones and new additions to the family are always part of family gatherings even if they’re napping in a room down the hall. Babies are small and growing which makes them more sensitive to changes, especially in temperature.

At around eleven months babies start to regulate their temperature and it's recommended that they are most comfortable anywhere between 16 to 22 degrees celsius. However, parents can tell when their child is okay and they know best what is ideal for their kid.

Ideal temperature for pets

Friendly four legged friends also have opinions about their ideal temperatures. Although many pets can adapt to their owners preferred room temperature, as they are excellent temperature regulators, some animals can't as well. Dogs with a lot of fur, hairless cats and other breeds have a harder time regulating to temperatures not ideal for their bodies.

Studies show dogs aren’t that different from people and also enjoy temperatures between 20ºC (68ºF) to 22ºC (71ºC). Cats like it to be warmer and can tolerate room temperatures at 30ºC (86ºF). While it’s not necessary to set the air to their liking when you're home with your pets, it's definitely good to be mindful if you like leaving the heating or air conditioner on while you're out and you remember to set your air system for them.

Ideal temperature for elders

For the grandparents, great aunts and uncles at your family gathering their ideal room temperature is higher at about 25ºC (77ºF). Our muscles become stiffer as we age and this is what makes it harder to move. Warmer temperatures help muscle movement and increase blood flow and are therefore more comfortable for the elderly.

Additionally, the temperature shouldn’t reach below 20ºC (68ºF) as it increases the risk of respiratory disease and even hypothermia. It’s important to take care of our elderly and inspect their heaters annually to ensure they are working and set properly.

Ideal temperature for plants

Recent findings have found that plants have feelings too, including their preference of temperature. Which makes sense, as different kinds of plants thrive in different climates. Indoor plants usually come from the tropical parts of the world and therefore like higher temperatures.

A research group at University of Georgia found that house plants on average responded best at 21ºC (69.8ºC) and 27ºC (80.6ºC) degrees during the daytime. However, the best practice is to ask your florist the ideal for your specific plant and be mindful like with pets, to set the temperature when you're away from your home to keep them healthy.

Ideal temperature for saving energy

According to the US Department of Energy, setting your thermostat to 20ºC (68ºF) is the ideal comfortable temperature that is the most energy efficient. Another 10% can be saved yearly by setting thermostats 6-8, 10-12 for at least 8 hours a day. Remembering to set your air conditioner properly when you leave the house or while you sleep can save you more money over time.

Ideal temperature for sleeping

Your family made it to the final last moments of the game and as the time runs out you’re either jumping out of your seats or sighing at the colossal loss of your team. Either way, as you head into the night, there is an ideal temperature for sleeping that is different from daytime.

Our sleep quality is affected by temperature, especially if it’s too warm. This is because our bodies naturally cool down while we sleep and therefore it's recommended to lower your temperatures at night to get a good night's sleep according to the Sleep Foundation.
